Herbalists have so much to offer towards supporting transgender health. This class will begin with an introduction to gender and the barriers that transgender folks face in society and healthcare settings. Then, through examining how these barriers show up in herbalism, we will explore how to move towards a more gender-affirming, trans-inclusive herbal medicine culture and practice. We will cover plenty of practical tips for trans-competence as well as considerations for choosing safe and effective herbs for your trans clients, including taking hormones and herbs concurrently and gender-affirming surgery support. What you take away from this class will benefit everyone you work with and will be one more step towards creating a more liberatory, accessible and empowering herbal medicine.
Ember Peters, RHP (HANS), (they/she) is a gender non-conforming clinical herbalist and educator based in rural Nova Scotia, Unceded Mi'kmaq Territory. They are the founder of Wild Current Herbalism and adjunct faculty at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism. Ember’s practice currently focuses on providing accessible sliding-scale herbal care to people with chronic illness, under-served people and providing clinical mentorship to advanced clinical students. Guided by nature, Ember’s teaching and clinical practice integrates scientific knowledge with energetic systems and recognizes community based holistic health as a tangible step towards collective and individual liberation and resilience. Ember is a Registered Herbal Practitioner with the Herbalist Association of Nova Scotia (HANS).
